German authorities announced Monday that they will not deport Iranians to their country in the face of the political crisis in Iran over the crackdown on protests that have been ongoing since September following the death in custody of a woman arrested for allegedly wearing the veil incorrectly.

«We agree that there will be no deportations until further notice,» said the chairman of the Conference of German Länder Interior Ministers, Joachim Herrmann, who is head of this department in Bavaria. Thus, the case will only be an option if dangerous persons are involved.

Herrmann has called on the Federal Government to provide the Länder with an assessment of the situation in Iran as a basis for decision-making, as reported by the German news agency DPA.

The announcement was made just hours after the Iranian government summoned the German ambassador in Tehran, Hans-Udo Muzel, to protest the «interventionist and unfounded statements» made by Berlin in relation to the protests that have been going on since September over the death in custody of Mahsa Amini and its support for the initiative in the United Nations Human Rights Council, which last week approved the creation of an independent international mission to investigate «alleged human rights violations» in Iran.

During the day, Foreign Ministry spokesman Naser Kanani stated that Tehran «will not cooperate» with an international investigation into the repression of the protests and stressed that it «has evidence» of the role of foreign countries in the demonstrations. The repression of the protests has resulted in more than 480 deaths, according to the latest toll provided by the non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights (IHR).
