The French National Assembly on Monday unanimously adopted a resolution condemning the repression by the Iranian authorities in the context of the protests that have erupted in the country following the death of young Mahsa Amini.

«This resolution aims to give the support of the National Assembly to the struggle of the women and men of Iran in their legitimate aspiration to respect their rights and fundamental freedoms, in the face of the repression orchestrated by a theocratic state,» reads the text.

It also explains that France, as a country bearing the motto «Liberty, Equality and Fraternity» must «convey a message of solidarity and fraternity to the Iranian people,» the National Assembly said in its letter.

It thus describes that the «excessive use of force by the Iranian regime against its own population» is accompanied by «an unjustifiable violation of freedom of expression», resulting in the «iron control and closure, including of the Internet and social networks».

The resolution therefore aims to call on the Iranian authorities to respect their international obligations in the context of the protests, which have resulted in more than 480 deaths, according to the latest toll provided by the non-governmental organization Iran Human Rights (IHR).

Before the vote, the French Foreign Minister, Catherine Colonna, once again called for the release of the seven French nationals held in Iran, as she did on 12 November last, when the detention of two more of their nationals became known.

More than twenty citizens of Western countries, most of them dual nationals, are being held in Iran, which international NGOs condemn as a policy of hostage-taking to obtain concessions, as recalled by the TF1 channel.
