Former U.S. President Donald Trump has filed a lawsuit against the House committee investigating the Capitol assault in an attempt to block the subpoena that would force him to testify before Congress.

This has been reported in a statement by Trump’s lawyer, David Warrington, who said that the separation of powers prohibits Congress from forcing a president to testify before him, as reported by CNN.

Warrigton has argued that after the committee undertook the unprecedented act» of demanding that Trump appear before Congress in «an effort» to insist on «the political path,» the former president would have had no choice but to open a judicial dispute.

As Trump has previously stated, complying with the House demand would «violate» privilege protections throughout the executive branch, including disclosing conversations he had with Justice Department officials and members of Congress about the 2020 election, the network has reported.

The committee voted overwhelmingly on October 13 for the former president to appear under oath for being the key to a «criminal conspiracy» to reverse the results of the November 2020 presidential election.

The committee’s main mission is to elucidate the role of the former U.S. president and his supporters during those days when they encouraged the takeover of Congress to disrupt the process that confirmed his defeat against the current president, Joe Biden, in the 2020 presidential election.
