The Permanent Council of the Organization of American States (OAS) has approved this Friday a resolution for an external firm to investigate accusations against the Secretary General of the organization, Luis Almagro, for «alleged misconduct».

The draft resolution, dated November 9, sponsored by Guatemala, Paraguay and Peru — it was initiated by the missions of Antigua and Barbuda and Uruguay — called for an outside firm to investigate the Secretary General’s conduct.

The approval of the resolution, contained on the official OAS website, explains that it will finally be an external firm that will investigate the accusations against Almagro, which were made by both a journalist from The Associated Press and an anonymous whistleblower via email to the OAS.

Among the measures established by the organization, the company in question is instructed to «submit within three months a report directly to the Chair of the Permanent Council, who will make it available to the Council without delay».

Almagro faces, according to media reports, two parallel investigations: one related to the dismissal of an employee at his official residence and another for maintaining a relationship with an official of the organization, having allegedly violated the code of ethics.
