Japan’s Ministry of Defense is studying the possibility of developing and equipping the Army with hypersonic missiles by 2030 and in the midst of an international increase in this type of weaponry, especially in the face of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Thus, the authorities have confirmed that the work to develop this type of weaponry is scheduled to begin in early 2023, according to the newspaper ‘Nikkei’.
The measure is being studied following reports of the development of possible similar missiles by China and North Korea, as well as the United States, which has led the authorities to consider that they must be prepared not only to intercept enemy missiles but to attack if necessary.
In this regard, Tokyo plans to complete the review of its national security strategy before the end of the year. Hypersonic missiles can travel at five times the speed of sound and take more complex trajectories. They are also more difficult to intercept.
