Thousands of people again marched through the streets of Iran on Sunday in protest against the death in custody last month of young Mahsa Amini despite a warning last Saturday by Revolutionary Guards chief Husein Salami against a possible repeat of the protests.

Witnesses of the DPA agency confirmed that the security forces again used force to suppress the demonstrations in several parts of the country.

For the time being, numerous rallies have been reported in Tehran, as well as a march in Mashhad, in the northeast of the country.

The police used tear gas to clear the demonstrations in the capital and even used truncheons to repress the demonstrators at the Mashhad rally, held at a university.

The commander of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard had warned the demonstrators on Saturday that «the protests will end today», in a message to the participants of the marches that have been going through the country for 40 days in protest of the death in custody of the young woman after her arrest for wearing the veil incorrectly.

«The protesters must not test the patience of the system,» the general warned Saturday before addressing the country’s youth directly: «The protests end today. Don’t go out on the streets anymore.»
