Sudanese security forces have used tear gas to disperse thousands of people rallying for another weekend in the country’s capital, Khartoum, to demand an immediate transition process to civilian rule from the ruling military junta.

Sudan Ajbar portal sources estimate that more than 4,000 demonstrators gathered in the city, mostly young people, carrying national flags and photographs of some of the 119 people killed by the authorities’ repression since the coup d’état.

The demonstrators advanced towards the Republican Palace shouting «the military to the barracks» before the security forces proceeded with the dispersal operation.

Demonstrations were also reported in Bahri, north of the capital, where some 2,000 people gathered, and in the sister city of Omdurman, where protesters blocked the main street, according to the pan-Arab Al Arabiya channel.

On October 25, 2021, leaders of an army faction — who were supported by several armed groups — overthrew the transitional government set up following an agreement between military and civil society forces after the fall of former dictator Omar Hassan al-Bashir in April 2019.

However, the current military leaders, led by Abdelfatá al Burhan, have announced an agreement in principle to cede power to a civilian government, but not before obtaining guarantees about its future. Military sources have informed Al Sharq media that al Burhan is holding just this Sunday a military and security meeting to discuss the security situation in the country.
