The team of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalni, imprisoned since January 2021 when he returned to the country from Germany, has denounced that he is being subjected to a »mysterious» isolation regime and could be being »poisoned».
The spokeswoman for the influential Russian dissident, Kira Yarmish, has expressed concern about Navalni’s health condition and stressed that he has lost eight kilos of weight in just two weeks.
Thus, she has warned in a video spread through her Twitter account that he could be undergoing a »slow poisoning», a possibility that »they do not rule out» for the moment.
The aim of this action would be, as he explained, to make Navalni disappear little by little »and attract less and less attention» from the population and media. He is in solitary confinement in a cell and is in severe pain. He has no medical help,» he said before stressing that »he is in danger».
In addition, he pointed out that last Friday the prison authorities had to call an ambulance to treat him for severe stomach pain, although no further details have emerged. The German government, for its part, has expressed its concern about his recent state of health.
Navalni, who has been sentenced to more than eleven years in prison for fraud and contempt of court, was jailed in January 2021 when he returned to Moscow from Berlin, where he had been recovering from a poisoning that he and Western governments attributed to Russian President Vladimir Putin’s security service. The Kremlin denies any responsibility.
The opponent, however, continues to insist that the case against him is a «political ruse» aimed at silencing him.
