Poland’s Prime Minister Mateusz Morawiecki has confirmed that Warsaw has sent rescue teams to Turkey to help with emergency efforts following Monday’s devastating earthquakes in the southeast of the country.
«Polish mine rescue teams are on their way to Turkey. The level of the tragedy is so great that any help is needed,» Morawiecki said in a terse post on his official profile on the social network Twitter.
Poland — along with 14 other European Union member states — mobilized on Monday to assist Turkey with emergency aid to deal with the effects of the tremors. The EU has already deployed rescue and search for survivors teams through the Civil Protection Mechanism.
About 6,200 people have been killed by the succession of earthquakes recorded on Monday in southern Turkey, near the border with Syria, according to data provided by the authorities of both countries and the ‘white helmets’ that serve in Syrian opposition areas.
In Turkey alone, the death toll has already exceeded 4,500 dead, so that the country’s president, Recep Tayyip Erdogan, has declared a state of emergency for the next three months in the main affected provinces, where troops from more than fifty countries have arrived.
