Former Pakistani President Pervez Musharraf died Sunday in a hospital in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, at the age of 79 after a long illness, his family confirmed to Geo News.
Musharraf’s family announced last June that the Pakistani leader had been admitted to the American Hospital in Dubai due to a worsening of his amyloidosis.
Musharraf came to power in 1999 following a coup against former Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif and resigned in 2008, after which he traveled to Dubai and London in self-imposed exile.
In March 2012, Musharraf returned to the country with the aim of leading his party in legislative elections, but a court disqualified him from the election race and he was exposed to a battery of charges against him for his actions while in power.
