The last head of government during the presidency of former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo, Betssy Chávez, has assured this Monday that she was unaware of the content of the speech given by the then president announcing the dissolution of Congress and the establishment of a government of exception.
This was detailed in a statement before the Subcommittee of Constitutional Accusations of the Parliament, in which she asserted that the measures announced by Castillo were never a purpose of her work as Prime Minister of the country and that she thought that in her speech she would only talk about the motion of censure that Congress was to vote that day, as reported by ‘El Comercio’.
«We assumed that it was going to be a pronouncement like the one she had made the day before at night, where in the same presidential office she announces a situation with a view to the motion of censure on Wednesday», expressed Chavez, reiterating that he was «totally» unaware of the content of her message.
«Before the charges brought by the Public Ministry, (I want to) clarify that as a first point, until the message to the Nation on December 7, on which all this case has been generated, I was totally unaware of said content, even more of the text that was spoken by Professor Pedro Castillo», he added.
Chávez has also denied any type of agreement or planning to attempt against democracy, as previously pointed out by the Prosecutor’s Office, by affirming that the country’s Justice has no evidence that he had met with any command of the Armed Forces to incite an armed uprising.
Thus, the former Prime Minister has defended herself from the accusations that she knew what would happen that day because of a message she wrote on the Whatsapp messaging service, where she described as «historic» the day of December 7, when Castillo announced the dissolution of Congress.
«Being my message, one of the last to indicate about a historic day. What is a historic day? It is an important date and how could it not be that on December 7 at 3 o’clock in the afternoon, not having the votes gives a vacancy of the President of the Republic, Pedro Castillo,» he emphasized, as reported by the aforementioned media.
The current President of Peru, Dina Boluarte, has put the spotlight on the last head of Government of former President Pedro Castillo, Betssy Chávez, assuring that she is the one who «owes an answer to the country» for her role in the political crisis of the last weeks.
«I believe that she cannot go unnoticed for all this political crisis that has been generated in the country», said Boluarte in allusion to Chávez, Prime Minister at the time when Castillo announced the dissolution of the Parliament and a Government of exception on December 7.
According to the Andean President, Chávez «walked together with the former President» Castillo and was by his side during the last months and hinted that a group of politicians, whom she did not mention, pushed the former President to take those decisions, which led to his dismissal and detention.
Peru is in the midst of a deep political crisis following the dismissal by the Congress of former President Pedro Castillo, who announced last December 7 the dissolution of the Andean Parliament and the establishment of a government of exception.
Following the arrest of the former president, tens of thousands of people came out to protest in various parts of the country to demand the resignation of President Dina Boluarte, the dissolution of Congress and the urgent calling of presidential elections. Since then, more than 60 people have lost their lives in riots between demonstrators and security forces.
