David DePape, the main defendant charged in the assault on Paul Pelosi, husband of U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, has taken responsibility for the crime in a call to a Fox affiliate where he apologized for not being even more violent and issued new threats against what he described as «freedom killers.»
DePape, who can be seen in a video of the assault released last Friday, has been charged with attempted murder and kidnapping after entering the Pelosi home and attacking Paul Pelosi with a hammer.
«I attacked Pelosi because freedom is not that it’s dying: it’s that it’s being systematically and deliberately murdered,» he has explained to KTVU. «These murderers have names and addresses, so I got hold of them to pay a little visit and talk one-on-one with them about their bad behavior,» he has added.
DePape apologized in a tongue-in-cheek manner because he couldn’t do «more» during the attack. «No one else is to blame. I should have prepared better,» he added.
The official police version says that DePape entered the Pelosi home in San Francisco in October last year with the intention of taking the former House speaker hostage, confronting the 82-year-old husband, who, after being hit with a hammer, had to undergo surgery for a skull fracture and serious injuries to his right arm and hand.
DePape’s Internet records describe him as a person prone to indulging in conspiracy theories on a wide range of topics, from aliens, communism, Jews, voter fraud in the 2020 presidential election and other types of conspiracies embraced by the American far-right.
