The Moroccan Parliament has gone a step further in showing its displeasure with the European Parliament resolution critical of Morocco for harassment of journalists and its alleged involvement in the payment of bribes to MEPs by sending a letter to the president of the European institution, Roberta Metsola, warning that the text is an «offense» to the Alawi country that damages the «loyal» and trusting relationship between the two regions.
«It is disappointment, dismay and deep regret (the feelings) that prevail the day after the resolution adopted by the European Parliament and that can hardly be qualified in any other way than as an offense to Morocco,» says the president of the Moroccan House of Representatives, Rachid Talbi Alami, in a letter accessed by Europa Press.
The letter also serves to convey to the European Parliament the decision agreed by the two chambers of the Moroccan Parliament on January 23 to «reconsider» bilateral relations in view of the «dangerous» drift of the European House for having «let itself be led by certain hostile circles» in the framework of «a campaign of false accusations directed at a traditional and credible partner».
Thus the Moroccan Parliament responds to the resolution of January 19 in the European Parliament with a very large majority in a vote in which the PP chose not to participate and from which the PSOE dissociated itself by voting almost alone against the text – unlike even its European family, Socialists and Democrats, which also supported it.
In this context, the letter of Rachid Talbi Alami to Metsola stresses the «loyal» partnership based on «mutual trust» that he says has always existed between the parliamentary assemblies of both regions and regrets that the usual channels of communication have been «circumvented» – for example the Joint Commission – and with the critical resolution these channels have been «empty».
«With the frankness of a partner who has always been loyal to the partnership between the Moroccan Parliament and the European Parliament: this resolution is a concentrate of accusations and inventions that affect the sovereignty of Morocco, the dignity of its Parliament, the integrity of its justice and the feelings of its people», criticizes the Moroccan politician.
He also underlines the rejection «en bloc» of the Moroccan Parliament of the Euro-parliamentary resolution which they consider «prejudicial and partial», includes «unfounded assertions» and seeks to exert «pressure» on the «sovereignty of Morocco and its independent justice».
In this context, the letter that Metsola has already received – but has not yet received a reply, according to parliamentary sources clarified to Europa Press – points to those who «unscrupulously» have «contaminated» the parliamentary activity with their own agenda with the aim of «discrediting» Morocco’s «irreversible democratic commitment».
