The suspect in the shooting that claimed the lives of seven people in the coastal town of Half Moon Bay in the U.S. state of California on Monday has said he suffers from mental illness and endured «years of bullying» at the farm where he worked.
This was admitted by Zhao Chunli, a 67-year-old Chinese citizen, during a jailhouse interview with NBC, where he said that after the shooting he drove to a police station to turn himself in.
Zhao attacked a mushroom farm — where he worked — as well as a farm dedicated to the sale of decorative stones, causing the death of seven people and injuring another. He has claimed that he endured «years of intimidation» combined with long hours on the farm, problems he would never have addressed.
He also said he believes he suffers from «some kind of mental illness» and that he was not in his right mind on the day of the shooting, according to the network.
Meanwhile, Zhao has been living in the United States for 11 years. He bought the gun used in the shooting in 2021 and did not encounter any obstacles when making the purchase. During the attack he acted alone, perpetrating the first shooting in the mushroom farm to then continue in the farm coming decorative stones, police sources recounted Monday.
