The European Commission has advanced that it will present a proposal this year to harmonize the procedures of data protection authorities on the occasion of Information Privacy Day, which is celebrated this January 28, to ensure the security of users, adapt European legislation to the digital transition and strengthen cooperation in cross-border cases.
In a joint statement, the Commissioner for Justice, Didier Reynders, and the Vice-President for Values and Transparency, Vera Jourova, stressed that European regulations in this area must «keep pace with the digitization of services and products».
In this regard, they have recalled milestones achieved throughout 2022, such as the Digital Markets Act and the Digital Services Act or actions against large multinational technology companies, which resulted in a series of significant fines.
Last year also saw the conclusion of negotiations between the European Union and the United States on a new data privacy framework, which enabled the Commission to launch the procedure to adopt an adequacy decision for transatlantic data flows.
According to the joint statement, European data protection legislation has become a global «benchmark» for personal data protection and ensuring its full implementation and strong enforcement will remain one of Brussels’ «top priorities».
