
The former Italian foreign minister and current president of the Council of State, Franco Frattini, died Saturday at the age of 65 in a Rome hospital where he was hospitalized for cancer, Rai reported.
Frattini was foreign minister between 2002 and 2004 and between 2008 and 2011, both under the government of then Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, who has remembered him as «a true servant of the state.»
«I will always remember the great ability to face complex problems with a smile, to be at ease in every role and the esteem he has sown. I will miss him as much as all the people who were lucky enough to be able to collaborate with him,» Berlusconi wrote on his Instagram profile.
From 2004 to 2008, Frattini was European Commissioner for Justice, Freedom and Security at the European Commission and his last position was that of President of the Italian Council of State, from January 2022.
