The Tupac Amaru organization began a three-day encampment on Wednesday in the Plaza de Mayo in Argentina’s capital, Buenos Aires, to demand a presidential pardon for its leader, Milagros Sala.
Although the call was initially scheduled for Tuesday, it had to be postponed as a result of the celebrations for the victory of the Argentine national team in the final of the World Cup in Qatar, as reported by the Argentine news agency Télam.
The protest will begin at around 4:00 p.m. (local time) with a small march along Avenida de Mayo in the Argentine capital to finally end at Plaza de Mayo, where the demonstrators will camp until Friday.
The Tupac Amaru group seeks that the president of Argentina, Alberto Fernández, grants Sala, sentenced to thirteen years in prison for embezzlement of public funds in the framework of the ‘Pibes Villeros’ case, in which some provincial officials and cooperative members are also involved, before the end of the year.
The Supreme Court of Justice of Argentina ratified the sentence last Thursday, thus dismissing the appeal filed by Sala and accusing the social leader of «illicit association» and «defrauding the State».
The leader of the Tupac Amaru group was part of a scheme that received large amounts of public money intended for the construction of housing through various cooperatives, to be subsequently diverted to Pibes Villeros.
The funds were delivered by members of different social organizations, who were extorted to withdraw the checks and divert the money to the «illicit association,» which operated between 2013 and 2015.
