Zelenski says Russia will be investigated for use of antipersonnel mines

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski – PRESIDENCIA DE UCRANIA

Ukrainian President Volodimir Zelenski assured Thursday that Russia will be investigated, among other charges, for the use of anti-personnel mines on Ukrainian territory.

«I am sure: this will be one of the charges against Russia for aggression, precisely for terrorism», said the Ukrainian president, after lamenting the death of several police officers who were killed in Kherson by mines laid by Russian troops.

«This is the form of Russian terror that will have to be countered in the years to come. The terrorists are deliberately trying to leave behind as many death traps as possible,» Zelensky said in his nightly address since the Russian invasion began on February 24.

Zelenski said that the use of mines – whether on land, buildings or cars – is «more cruel and meaner» than the use of missiles «because there is no anti-mine system that can destroy at least part of the threat,» referring to air defense equipment.

Thus, the president, who warned that the mined area in the country reaches more than 170 thousand square kilometers, had words of gratitude for the allied countries that «help Ukraine with demining».

In this regard, he particularly thanked Canada, Japan, the United Kingdom and Slovakia, as well as donors of the United24 program, «who understand how important it is that Ukraine is not left alone with the problem of the mined territory».
