Republican James David (JD) Vance, supported by former President Donald Trump, has won the Senate race for the State of Ohio in the U.S. midterm congressional elections, CNN television network has reported.

Vance has thus beaten his rival, Democrat Tim Ryan, in a close fight to win the upper house seat for the Republican Party, which holds this seat for the fifth consecutive term.

Democrats were betting on Ryan, a moderate in the Democratic Party, as one of the best options to win the seat for their caucus. The winner’s campaign focused on linking his opponent, a member of the House, with the Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, and with the President of the country, Joe Biden.

This GOP nominee marks a victory for Trump, whose endorsement in the party’s primaries was decisive for Vance. However, the now senator was initially part of the «Never Trump» movement.

The Ohio Senate winner said he was «overwhelmed with gratitude» after thanking his family and his campaign team, as well as the Republican Party.

«We have a great opportunity to govern and we need to take advantage of it. We need better leadership in Washington DC, that’s exactly what I promise to fight for every day,» Vance said.

Vance — who promised security on the southern border — continues the trend of Republican victories in recent years in states like Ohio, which until recently was considered a ‘swing state’.
