Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Melonim has described as «legitimate» and «justified» the policy implemented by her Executive after migrants from the ship ‘Geo Barents’ disembarked on Tuesday in the Italian port of Catania.
«The Italian government is complying with all international conventions and the ban imposed on these ships remaining in Italian waters beyond the time necessary to ensure rescue operations and assistance to fragile people,» the leader of Brothers of Italy has indicated.
Thus, Meloni stressed that on board the boats «there are no castaways but migrants» and explained that the decision of the health authority to disembark all the migrants because their state of health was considered «fragile» did not depend on the government, as reported by the AdnKronos news agency.
«Choice, that of the health authority, which seemed bizarre to us», he has expressed with regard to the migrants on board the ‘Geo Barents’, whose disembarkation took place on Tuesday, as confirmed by the coordinator of the delegation of Doctors Without Borders, Juan Matias Gil.
In this sense, he has charged against the Italian press, assuring that there are read «surreal headlines» and «far from reality», at the same time that he has highlighted that the first measure that he approved in his Executive was the fight against mafias, as reported by the newspaper ‘La Reppublica’.
«There is still much to be done also to counteract decades of migratory propaganda that has settled at all levels and that overlaps the plan to protect refugees with the control of migratory flows. Different plans that should not be mixed», he added.
International and humanitarian organizations have denounced that the selective reception of migrants ordered by the Italian authorities and which only accepts the disembarkation of vulnerable migrants is a violation of international law.
