The Ministry of Health of Ecuador has raised this Sunday to 28 the number of deaths and 85 the number of people admitted for intoxication due to the ingestion of adulterated alcohol sold without control or registration in the Ecuadorian provinces of Esmeraldas and Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas.
Specifically, health authorities reported 14 deaths in the province of Esmeraldas, in the north of the country, as well as another 14 deaths in the province of Santo Domingo de los Tsáchilas, 100 km west of Quito, the capital.
In addition, of the total number of people under clinical study, six patients are in critical condition. Likewise, another 28 people have been discharged since the last report.
This outbreak of intoxicated people takes place after alcohol was sold without any kind of registration and of «dubious origin». The Ecuadorian Police seized 50,000 liters of this type of liquor in Esmeraldas and Santo Domingo.
In view of this situation, health authorities are actively monitoring people who have consumed alcohol and present symptoms such as blurred vision, abdominal pain, nausea, dizziness and loss of consciousness, urging people who present such symptoms to go to a medical center.
