The King of Morocco, Mohamed VI, has invited the President of Algeria, Abdelmayid Tebune, to visit Rabat in the near future, taking advantage of the recent attendance of the Moroccan Foreign Minister, Naser Burita, at the Arab League summit held in Algiers.

Burita has personally conveyed this invitation, according to Foreign Ministry sources consulted by Europa Press, in the hope that the two leaders can resume a dialogue which is currently non-existent, given the lack of diplomatic ties between the two neighboring countries.

The Algerian government broke off such relations in August 2021, citing a series of circumstances among which it cited the lack of progress in the resolution of the open dispute over Western Sahara, in which Algiers is an ally of the Polisario Front.

Despite this estrangement, an Algerian minister traveled to Rabat to invite Mohamed VI to attend this week’s Arab League forum. Initially, there was speculation that he might attend, but Burita ended up ruling it out and assuming the leadership of the delegation just hours before the start of the forum.

The summit also revealed the political pulse that Morocco and Algeria are still waging, with cross accusations about alleged rudeness in matters of protocol or false information, among other controversies.
