Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said Thursday that protests in the country following the death of young Mahsa Amini while in police custody «pave the way for terrorist attacks» such as the one that took place Wednesday in a mosque in the southern city of Shiraz.

In a televised speech, the Iranian president said that this type of «disturbances» favor violent acts by those who «do not want Iran to prosper». «Security and peace are necessary to produce knowledge and science,» he said.

In this regard, he stressed the importance of fostering «hope in people’s hearts» and stressed that the protests «are cruel to innocent people whose lives have been damaged,» as reported by the Mehr news agency.

«The enemy has seen that sanctions are ineffective and has failed in its attempts in the face of the clear evidence that the Iranian development train is accelerating its march,» he insisted before stressing that there are «those who want to isolate Iran.»

The authorities have indicated that at least fifteen people have been killed and 40 others injured following an armed attack on the mosque of Shiraz, whose authorship has already been claimed by the terrorist group Islamic State.

The attack is part of the demonstrations over the death of Amini, which have once again led hundreds of people to take to the streets in various parts of the country to protest against the government.
