The customs staff union at several UK airports will go on strike for eight days over the Christmas vacations.

These stoppages affect a total of 1,000 passport control staff, as well as other officials at Heathrow, Gatwick, Manchester, Glasgow, Cardiff, Birmingham airports.

PCS union leader Mark Serwotka has indicated that the strikes «will escalate» unless the government «puts money on the table now», as reported by the BBC.

In this sense, Serwotka has assured that the workers «have no other option» but to strike: «They are currently skipping meals, they cannot turn on the heating at home, due to the poverty in which they live».

In addition, he has specified that there have been talks with the government for a 2 percent wage increase. «They keep saying that their door is open, but it is a very strange door because there is nothing behind it,» he has asserted.
