Ukrainian authorities warned early Monday that Kiev, the country’s capital, has been left partially without electricity and drinking water in the face of a series of shelling carried out by Russian forces against facilities and infrastructures of «vital» importance throughout the country.

The mayor of the city, Vitali Klitschko, confirmed the information and pointed out that «80 percent of consumers have no drinking water in the capital» as a result of the attacks by the Russian Army, as he reported through his Telegram channel.

«Specialists are working to restore the supply as soon as possible. Currently the damage has resulted in the majority being without drinking water. Just in case, please save water whenever possible,» he has asserted.

He explained that Kiev’s air defense systems have already been activated and urged the population «not to panic» and to protect themselves in shelters and safe places. «Be attentive to the information from the authorities,» he said.

Although air defense systems have managed to intercept dozens of Russian missiles, the authorities have warned of casualties in the region, where «the threat continues», Ukrinform news agency reported.

In this sense, they have explained that emergency services have already moved to the most affected areas in an attempt to restore the power supply after some 350,000 homes have suffered a blackout and have warned that residents could face a «long period of time» without light.

The shelling of Kiev is part of the latest wave of «massive» attacks carried out by Russian troops against major cities. Ukrainian authorities have warned that explosions have been recorded in several parts of the country, including the Zaporiyia region. In total, 18 facilities have been hit in about ten regions, most of them energy ones.

The Ukrainian Armed Forces have put the number of intercepted and destroyed missiles at 44, although they estimate that more than half a hundred were launched in a «simultaneous» attack on Ukrainian soil. «The consequences could have been much worse,» lamented Prime Minister Denis Shmihal, as reported by the UNIAN news agency.
