Ukraine and Russia have blamed each other for this morning’s shelling of the eastern Ukrainian town of Energodar, near the Zaporiyia nuclear power plant, which has left most of the town without electricity supply, although so far there are no casualties to report.

The Ukrainian mayor of the city, Dimitro Orlov, has blamed Russia for using this shelling in a city occupied in principle by Moscow forces to «discredit the Armed Forces of Ukraine», according to a message posted on his Telegram account.

«This morning, the occupants of Energodar have returned with their provocations. As a result of the shelling of the industrial zone, most of the city was left without electricity. Previously, they hit one of the substations,» Orlov has indicated.

«Information about the extent of the damage and the restoration of power supply is being clarified,» the mayor added. Moscow has not yet commented on the incident.

Shortly afterwards, the Russian official in charge in the city, Alexander Volga, has pointed the finger at Ukrainian forces for what happened. «Today they have perpetrated an attack on the vital infrastructure and power lines of Energodar,» he let it be known on his Telegram account.

«Emergency teams are already at work. They are moving to the emergency laying. Power supply in the city will be restored in the near future. The situation is under control,» he added.
