U.S. Supreme Court rejects Trump’s appeal to prevent his tax returns from reaching Congress

The U.S. Supreme Court on Tuesday rejected an appeal filed by former President Donald Trump to try to prevent the Internal Revenue Service from turning over his tax returns to a Democrat-led House committee.

The Supreme Court’s decision is therefore a major defeat for a Trump who in recent years has worked to prevent his tax returns from coming to light, just at a time when investigations into his contributions have multiplied, CNN reports.

In fact, the House Ways and Means Committee already tried to get hold of Trump’s tax returns in 2019, with the tycoon still as president of the United States, the main reason why this requirement did not prosper. Already in 2021, with Joe Biden as tenant of the White House, the requests were resumed.

The case now takes a new turn after only three weeks ago the Supreme Court itself temporarily prohibited the publication of such tax returns, until other judicial instances evaluate whether or not to accept the review of previous rulings of the Justice on this matter.

Therefore, now the House of Representatives committee can get the quickest possible way to obtain the tycoon’s declarations. Meanwhile, Trump’s lawyers believe that the real intentions of the committee are to release this tax information to the public.
