Miami authorities have ordered the evacuation of all residents of an apartment block located near the Surfside building that collapsed in June 2021 in an incident that killed nearly 100 people.
The building, which is located in Port Royale in the Miami Beach area, has severe structural damage, an inspection team has concluded, warning of danger to residents of the 164 apartments that make up the building.
Authorities have issued an order to leave the building by 7 p.m. (local time) on Friday, according to the Miami Herald. Engineers have recommended additional shoring in the building’s parking lot to reinforce the areas in need of repair and to solve the problem caused by a damaged beam. However, this shoring may take 10 days and it is not known when residents will be able to return to the building.
The ordinance passed by Miami-Dade County authorities after the 2021 collapse states that property owners are required to pay for up to three months of housing for residents who must be evacuated because their homes are deemed unsafe due to negligent maintenance.
