The U.S. Senate has rejected allegations brought by Republican senators and has endorsed the recently passed Veterans Affairs Act, which guarantees access to abortion for ex-military women in several scenarios.

The resolution, which had been introduced by Alabama Senator Tommy Tuerville, failed with 48 votes in favor and 51 against. Among the Republican senators who voted against the measure — which allows the U.S. Veterans Agency to provide abortions to former military women if their lives are at risk or if they have become pregnant as a result of rape or incest — were Lisa Murkowski and Susan Collins.

These two senators have thus joined the Democrats, who support the measure, which has raised controversy in the midst of rising national tension following the Supreme Court’s decision to overturn in 2022 the Roe v. Wade ruling, which recognized the constitutional right of women to have access to this practice, according to information from the CNN television network.

Before the vote, the President of the United States, Joe Biden, promised that he would veto such a resolution in case the Upper House supported it in its attempt to veto access to abortion in several cases for ex-military women.
