The governments of Hungary and Poland on Saturday announced a ban on imports of agricultural products from Ukraine until June 30.
»The government is committed to representing the interests of Hungarian farmers and, like Poland, in the absence of effective measures from the European Union, will introduce a temporary ban on the import of Ukrainian grain and oilseeds and some other agricultural products to Hungary,» Hungarian Agriculture Minister István Nagy said.
Nagy has claimed that, if current trends continue, the country’s farmers would suffer »great harm» because Ukraine uses methods not used in the European Union and which allow huge production at »extremely low» prices, according to Polish broadcaster Polskie Radio.
The Hungarian government plans to adopt other solutions by the time the final date of the ban arrives.
For his part, the Polish Minister of Agriculture, Robert Telus, has announced that the Government »is open» to discuss and address the issue after Ukraine proposed a meeting to seek solutions.
The list of banned products includes cereals, sugar, cattle feed, seeds, hops, flax, hemp, fruits, vegetables, processed fruit and vegetable products, wine, beef, veal, milk and dairy products, pork, lamb, eggs, poultry, ethyl alcohol of agricultural origin, bee products, live pigs, horses, cattle and slaughtered meat.
