The European Union announced Friday that it will allocate one million euros in emergency aid for those affected by last weekend’s massive fire in the Cox’s Bazar Rohingya refugee camp in Bangladesh, which has left at least 12,000 people homeless.
The European Union warns that the fire has had »devastating consequences» for the occupants of one of the world’s largest refugee camps, the main home of a minority that staged, in 2017, an exodus of nearly one million people fleeing a crackdown by the Burmese Army in their home state of Rajine.
The aid will go towards emergency repair work, particularly on affected water purification facilities, shelter, latrines and the prevention of disease outbreaks.
The European Union Commissioner for Crisis Management, Janez Lenarcic, has recalled that both the European bloc and the International Organization for Migration have reacted quickly to the fire through the arrival on the scene of immediate response teams to assist those affected.
