The Government of Argentina has announced on Tuesday the repeal of the authorization to the United Kingdom of the air service from Sao Paulo (Brazil) to the disputed Falkland Islands, with a stopover in the Argentine city of Cordoba.

»This decision has been reached after presenting the UK with numerous initiatives to achieve greater connectivity between the Argentine mainland and the Falkland Islands,» reads a statement from the Argentine Foreign Ministry.

The Argentine authorities have reproached the British Government for having »prevented any real and concrete progress in the sense of allowing a direct flight» from the Argentine mainland to the islands.

However, Buenos Aires has reiterated its willingness to resume negotiations on the sovereignty of the islands, while urging to address an agenda with issues including greater connectivity between the islands and the mainland.

In fact, last week the Argentine Executive put an end to the ‘Foradori-Duncan Pact’ agreement, signed in 2016 with the UK, which aimed to encourage the economic development and exploitation of the Falkland Islands and surrounding areas.

The dispute over the sovereignty of the archipelago dates back to the 19th century and involved in 1982 a direct war between the two countries. Buenos Aires has traditionally been against any gesture towards London, which is why the 2016 pact was viewed with particular suspicion mainly on the political left.
