The Chinese government has for the first time accused U.S. authorities of violating Chinese airspace with balloons, specifically more than ten since the beginning of 2022, following a weekend marked in North America by the shooting down of several unidentified flying objects.
«It is nothing unusual for U.S. balloons to illegally enter the airspace of another country,» Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said Monday in a media appearance reported by Bloomberg.
Wang urged Washington to «reflect» on its own behavior and change «wrong practices». Beijing, he warned, «reserves the right to take the necessary measures to respond to relevant incidents».
Joe Biden’s Administration has accused the Asian giant of flying spy balloons and, although the Chinese side has acknowledged its link to a first downed device, it has limited itself to claiming that it was for scientific purposes. The U.S. authorities have not identified the origin of three other devices shot down this weekend.
In addition, the Taiwanese government has observed a multitude of alleged Chinese spy balloons in its airspace in recent years, raising fears in Taipei that Beijing may be preparing for an attack against the country, according to sources quoted by the ‘Financial Times’.
