North Korean authorities announced Monday the «expansion and reorganization» of «many» of its military units due to the «new situation» in the region, while stressing that this is a move «in line with the Workers’ Party of Korea’s idea of building a powerful military.»
According to information gathered by the North Korean state news agency, KCNA, the decision includes «the assignment of combat operational tasks» to these units, «as required by the new situation and environment, as well as the strategic and tactical missions of the modified units».
The decision was announced days after North Korean authorities held a military parade in the capital, Pyongyang, in which it displayed intercontinental ballistic missiles and tactical nuclear operations units in commemoration of the 75th anniversary of the founding of the North Korean People’s Army.
North Korean leader Kim Jong Un said in a speech during the parade that the North Korean People’s Army «is strong in ideology and faith» and is «capable of defeating any formidable enemy with one blow,» referring to its weaponry. North Korean media did not mention the exact model of the intercontinental ballistic missiles nor has it confirmed whether a new weapon has appeared that had not been revealed until now.
Just a week earlier, the U.S. and South Korean Armed Forces had deployed fighter jets in a series of maneuvers aimed at improving the «defense capabilities» of the two countries, after North Korea warned that it could take «forceful measures» against any military action carried out by the U.S. under the «tit-for-tat» principle, even in the case of using nuclear weapons.
