The death toll from last Monday’s earthquake in Syria now stands at 5,273, according to the latest death toll published by the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. Turkey has confirmed 24,617 dead, bringing the total death toll to 29,890.

The figure for Syria is broken down by area: 2,063 in the regions controlled by the government of President Bashar al-Assad and 3,210 in the areas of the Salvation Government and the Syrian Interim Government, according to the Observatory.

The Observatory, an independent body based in London with sources inside Syria, estimates that the total number of dead will reach 7,000 and also warns that hundreds of people are still missing under the rubble.

It also warns that the figures do not include the dead whose victims were buried quickly after the earthquake, before the arrival of rescue teams, and the more than 1,000 Syrians killed on Turkish territory whose bodies were transferred to Syria. Hundreds of relatives of the displaced await at the Bab al Hawa border crossing where truckloads of bodies arrive daily for identification.

In addition, rescue teams have not been able to reach some remote areas of the country and in others rescue work has already been suspended due to the little hope of finding people alive under the rubble six days after the landslide. In other areas, the lack of heavy machinery has been an obstacle to rescue efforts.
