Brazilian authorities said Monday afternoon that six people are dead and two others are missing after the fishing boat they were on sank in Guanabara Bay, in the state of Rio de Janeiro.
After two days of searching, the last of the fatalities – the sixth – has been identified. It is a three-year-old boy, according to the Brazilian channel G1.
The survivors, six of the 14 people on board, were rescued by a boat that was passing near the area when the accident occurred, caused by a strong gale that surprised the boat when it was returning to the mainland.
Police have opened an investigation into the deaths of the crew members of the boat, which sank on Sunday. For the moment, the facts are being investigated as involuntary manslaughter.
Likewise, the Navy has opened an internal procedure to determine the circumstances and responsibilities of the accident, as reported by ‘O Globo’.
