The electoral day that Ecuador is experiencing this Sunday has concluded among Ecuadorians living in Spain with a participation rate close to 20 percent, in line with that of previous elections, since voting is not compulsory for expatriates.
In Spain, Ecuadorian citizens have not been able to participate in local elections, but they have been able to participate in the renewal of the Council for Citizen Participation and Social Control (CPCCS) and in the eight-question referendum promoted by the Government of Guillermo Lasso to propose constitutional amendments.
Of the 179,137 Ecuadorians entitled to participate in this day in Spain, 36,602 participated, according to data provided by the Embassy. Madrid accumulated more than a third part of these expatriates and finally 16,440 people participated, with a participation rate of around 25 percent.
The polling stations have opened in Spain from 9.00 to 19.00 (peninsular time), distributed in twenty localities, and the ambassador, Andrés Vallejo, has emphasized that it has been a «very positive» day with a «great organization».
