An aid worker from the United States has died in the eastern Ukrainian town of Bajmut after his ambulance was shelled while assisting Ukrainian civilians.
Pete Reed, a volunteer aid worker and founder of Global Response Medicine (GRM), lost his life on Thursday when he was attacked while helping Ukrainian civilians, according to the organization itself in a statement reported by CNN.
«Yesterday, GRM founder Pete Reed was killed in Bajmut, Ukraine. Pete was the cornerstone of GRM, as chairman of the board for 4 years. In January, Pete left GRM to work with Global Outreach Doctors on their mission in Ukraine and was killed while providing aid,» the letter reads.
«It is a stark reminder of the dangers faced by humanitarian and rescue workers in conflict zones when tending to citizens caught in the crossfire,» GRM added, assuring that it will strive to «honor his legacy.»
The U.S. State Department has confirmed the death of the humanitarian worker and details that it is in contact with the family to provide all possible consular assistance.
