British authorities have reported that they have opened an independent investigation into the 1998 car bombing in the Northern Irish town of Omagh that killed 29 people.
This was confirmed by the British Minister for Northern Ireland, Chris Heaton-Harris, who said that he had requested the opening of this inquiry into the attack, which also left 200 people injured.
The announcement came after a British court recommended in 2021 that the British authorities investigate possible security failures on that day in August 1998, just four months after the Good Friday Agreement. The Justice has indicated that the security forces had a «real possibility» to have prevented the attack, perpetrated by the Real IRA.
«The Omagh bombing was a terrible atrocity committed by the Genuine IRA, which caused damage to the families of those tragically killed or injured. Its impact was felt not only in Northern Ireland but around the world,» Heaton-Harris said in a British government statement.
«Given the court’s recommendation, I believe that an independent inquiry is the most appropriate way to address this,» she said before thanking the families and survivors for their «patience».
