The president of Brazil’s Supreme Court, Judge Rosa Weber, opened the new judicial year on Wednesday promising to impose «the rigor of the law» against those who participated in any way in the coup attacks on the Esplanade of the Ministries on January 8.
«Those who conceived it, practiced it, inspired it and those who financed it will be held accountable with the rigor of the law in the different spheres, only in this way will the constitutional order be reaffirmed», said Weber in her opening speech, according to Brazilian media.
The plan of the Supreme Court was accompanied by the President of Brazil, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco, during a solemn act in which images of the destruction suffered by the seat of the court during the assault of that mob of followers of Jair Bolsonaro were shown.
«In this same plenary fully reconstituted after the criminal invasion of last January 8 by a demented mob moved by hatred and irrationality, I reaffirm my profession as a judge,» stressed the judge, who has promised an «uncompromising defense» of the Constitution and the democratic and rule of law.
Despite those attacks carried out by that «ignorant» and «irrational» mob, Weber stressed that they could not destroy the «spirit of democracy», which will continue to «illuminate the minds and hearts» of the Supreme Court justices. «Let the enemies of freedom know that on the sacred ground of this court, the democratic regime remains unshakable,» he warned.
