The legal team for one-time Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has requested a new jury trial after he was convicted in December of rape, forcible oral copulation, as well as a third count of sexual misconduct.
Weistein’s lawyers have filed a motion seeking a new trial before Judge Lisa Lench — who presided over the previous trial — and Assistant District Attorneys Paul Thompson and Marlene Martinez — who prosecuted the case, reports Variety.
This request will be heard in court on February 23, which is the date on which the sentence of Weinstein, convicted after a model and actress testified that the movie mogul assaulted her in a Beverly Hills hotel room in February 2013, as reported by CNN.
Weinstein, already serving a 23-year sentence in New York after being convicted of rape and sexual assault in 2020, was convicted of three counts of rape and sexual assault in December 2022. However, the jury has not reached a unanimous decision on three other counts.
More than 100 women have accused Weinstein of sexual misconduct since 2017, the time when the #MeToo movement broke out, when countless actresses, models and women in the film world denounced the producer.
