Azerbaijani security forces have arrested seven alleged members of an Iranian spy ring in an operation in the capital Baku on Monday, amid rising tensions following last week’s attack on the Azeri embassy in Tehran.
According to information gathered by the Azeri news agency APA, the operation was carried out by agents under orders of the Interior Ministry. Iranian authorities have not commented on the raid, which took place hours after Baku advised its citizens to avoid «unnecessary» travel to Iran.
Azerbaijani Deputy Foreign Minister Jalaf Jalafov said Monday that Baku has no confidence in the security guarantees Iranian authorities can promise for Azeri diplomatic employees following last week’s attack, which prompted Azerbaijan to suspend its activities at the legation.
Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev «fiercely» condemned the «terrorist attack» and called on Iranian authorities to have the incident «promptly investigated and the terrorists punished.» Iran condemned the incident and the authorities said that preliminary investigations pointed to «personal motives».
