Peru’s Ombudsman’s Office said Sunday that the country’s government and Congress have «the political power to pacify and change» the situation in the Andean nation, which has been embroiled in anti-government protests since early December.
«The most morally repulsive way to act is to let people die when you have in your hands the political power to pacify and change the tragic course of these days. The Legislative Power and the Executive Power can do it,» reads a communiqué from the organization.
«Every day that passes, someone’s life is in danger, and democracy – that great republican yearning – is unraveling before our eyes,» denounced the Ombudsman’s Office, which reported that 58 deaths have been registered since the beginning of the protests.
Thus, the entity has recalled the responsibility of the country’s institutions, criticizing that «the death of people in protests is not a ‘social cost’, nor a ‘collateral damage'».
«Peruvians ratify periodically, through the popular vote, our faith in democracy. And we hope that democracy considers the lives of each one of us as a priority: students, police, doctors, soldiers, indigenous peoples, businessmen, journalists and public officials,» the letter continues.
In this sense, the Ombudsman’s Office wanted to recall that one of its functions is to «recover the ethical sense of public function and citizen conduct, in whose center is and will always be human life».
