The military coup leader and general of the Sudanese Army, Abdelfatá al Burhan, has agreed with the South Sudanese President, Salva Kiir, to establish a joint force on the border between the two countries, which covers some 1,800 kilometers.
The agreement was announced after a series of talks between the two leaders in South Sudan’s capital Juba, state-run Sudan TV reported.
The defense and foreign ministers of the two countries also took part in the meetings, in which they also discussed the situation in the disputed region of Abyei.
Thus, they agreed to hold «regular meetings» to resolve the dispute over the territory, whose status was suspended when South Sudan declared its independence in 2011 and remains one of the main sources of conflict between the two countries because of its geostrategic importance and its energy reserves.
Kiir, for his part, has informed Al Burhan of the implementation of the peace agreement reached in 2018 in South Sudan, of which Sudan is one of the main guarantors.
