The vice president-elect, Geraldo Alckmin, met this Thursday with the country’s still vice president, Ciro Nogueira, in what is the first meeting between representatives of the current and future Executive to discuss the transfer of power from the president, Jair Bolsonaro, to his successor, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva.

Alckmin went to the Planato Palace (headquarters of the Brazilian Executive) together with Gleisi Hoffmann, president of Lula’s party, the Workers’ Party (PT); and the coordinator of the President-elect’s government plan, Aloizio Mercadante.

In declarations to the press, the one who will be Lula’s ‘number two’ acknowledged that the conversation with Nogueira was «quite fruitful» and asserted that this gesture confirms that the «transition» of the Executive has already begun.

According to Brazilian legislation, the president-elect has the right to form a transition team of up to 50 people who will have access to the data of the Public Administration and thus be able to start preparing the first measures of the Government.

Although Alckmin did not want to advance any names of the members of the transition team, he did confirm that it will be formed by members of the parties that formed a coalition with Lula in the elections.

ROAD BLOCKADES Beyond issues related to the transfer of power, Alckmin has referred to the road blockades perpetrated by Bolsonaro’s supporters, although the president already called on Wednesday night to free the roads.

«It is serious, people’s health, supplies, hospitals, transplants, vaccines, food, fuel, damages can be compromised. Who will pay for these damages? Who will be responsible for these damages?» said Alckmin.
