The president of Colombia, Gustavo Petro, has called the situation in Peru, which has registered nearly fifty deaths since the beginning of the anti-government protests, a «massacre against the population».

«What is taking place in Peru is a massacre against the population. A political and peaceful solution is essential. Stop the death and sit down to talk,» Petro has considered, as indicated in his profile on the social network Twitter.

The Colombian president has urged the implementation of precautionary measures, which he considers «essential», from the Inter-American Human Rights system, which «must act urgently».

During the last 24 hours, 18 people have died during protests calling for the resignation of Dina Boluarte’s government and the calling of presidential elections.

With the latest deaths, at least 45 people have lost their lives since the outbreak of the mobilizations for the dismissal of President Pedro Castillo, who was removed by Congress after trying to arrogate more powers to himself with a view to forming a government of exception.

For its part, the Peruvian Public Prosecutor’s Office has confirmed a preliminary investigation against the country’s president, Dina Boluarte, as well as several ministers, who are being investigated for genocide, aggravated homicide and serious injuries committed during the demonstrations which have been going on since December.

Among the main demands of the demonstrators is the resignation of Boluarte – until then Castillo’s ‘number two’ – as president of the country and the calling of new elections.
