Nigerian authorities announced Monday the rescue of six people who were kidnapped over the weekend in a suspected terrorist attack at a train station in Edo state, southern Nigeria.
The Secretary for Communication in Edo State, Chris Nehikhare, explained Monday that the rescued victims are a 65-year-old man, a mother and her baby, a six-year-old girl, and two boys — brothers — aged two and five.
«We are confident that the other victims will be rescued soon, as the highly motivated security personnel are in high spirits and have redoubled their pursuit of the kidnappers,» Nehikhare added, referring to the fact that the total number of people kidnapped was more than thirty.
«We commend the efforts of the bush rescue team and their support staff who have been working tirelessly since the incident occurred to ensure that the hijacked passengers are rescued and reunited with their families,» he added, a statement said.
Several gunmen attacked commuters waiting for their train to arrive Saturday night at Edo station, abducting 31 of them and injuring several others, although Nigerian authorities did not provide further details.
The Ministry of Transport assured, after announcing the arrest of one of the suspects, that the Nigerian Police «are on the trail of the criminals».
