The Brazilian Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office has announced the opening of a criminal investigation into the «violent acts» in the demonstrations that have resulted in the occupation of the headquarters of Congress, the Federal Supreme Court and the presidential palace in Brasilia by supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro demanding a coup d’état.

«The Attorney General of the Republic, Augusto Aras, monitors and accompanies with concern the acts of vandalism against public buildings that have occurred in Brasilia this Sunday,» the MPF said in a statement.

Aras «maintains permanent contact with the authorities and has taken the initiatives that fall within the competence of this institution to prevent the sequence of acts of violence,» it continues.

Thus, it mentions a request to the Federal District Prosecutor’s Office for the «immediate opening of criminal investigation proceedings».

In addition, Aras «contacted the Attorney General of Justice of the Federal District and Territories, Georges Seigneur, «to act in the external control of police activity in the Federal District».

Bolsonaro’s supporters have taken this Sunday by storm the headquarters of the Congress, the Federal Supreme Court and the Planalto Palace, seat of the Brazilian Presidency. Security forces have already managed to clear the headquarters of the Supreme Court.
