Juan Guaidó has said goodbye this Thursday to the position of «interim president» of Venezuela reproaching the elimination of this figure and the lack of unity of the opposition after the majority of opposition deputies of the 2015 National Assembly decided to end his leadership.
«Our fight is not for a position», has expressed Guaidó, who has asked not to eliminate this figure of the interim government in order not to lose the achievements that would have been reached these years doing opposition to President Nicolás Maduro.
Guaidó considers that his fellow opposition members «have struck laterally» to the Constitution by abolishing the figure of the interim president. «You cannot leave a power vacuum», he has stressed, urging the new directive to assume «the competences of the Executive» to avoid «what the dictatorship has done».
In reference to his dismissal as «interim president» by the vast majority of the opposition deputies of the 2015 National Assembly, Guaidó has regretted that «it is difficult to speak of unity» after that vote and now «the task is double», since not only the Constitution must be assumed, but also cohesion must be recovered.
«It is difficult to speak of unity in the midst of this divided vote. Therefore, the immediate task is presented, not only of the board of directors, but of the entire democratic alternative in Venezuela. It is necessary to transcend the partisan interests, the particular transcendents to unify a whole country», he said.
Guaidó has also thanked the Venezuelan «comrades in struggle» and the international community for the support provided these last four years. «Do not leave us alone,» he asked.
In parallel, the Venezuelan opposition has elected this Thursday deputy Dinorah Figuera, from the Primero Justicia party, as the new president of the 2015 National Assembly, who will now be in charge of managing Venezuelan assets that have been frozen abroad as part of international sanctions.
In addition to Figuera, the deputy of Un Nuevo Tiempo Marianela Fernández has been appointed as first vice-president and Auristela Vásquez, of Acción Democrática, as second vice-president. All three are currently in exile.
