Several parliamentary groups have requested explanations from the Peruvian Foreign Minister, Ana Gervasi, regarding the decision to declare the now former ambassador of Mexico, Pablo Monroy, persona non grata, which led to his expulsion from the country.
This motion of interpellation has the signatures of Peru Libre, Peru Bicentenario, Bloque Magisterial and Peru Democrático, as reported by RPP radio station.
In the request, the signatories argue that the Minister must specify which are the constituent elements to consider the words of the Mexican authorities as «interference».
These parliamentarians consider that the statements made by the President of Mexico, Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, regarding the situation of violence in Peru do not represent interference.
«The presidents of Mexico, Colombia, Bolivia and Argentina expressed their concern to the Peruvian government, calling for a solution through dialogue and the cessation of violence. This is what brotherly countries should do to contribute to the peaceful solution of controversies», indicated the parliamentarian of Peru Libre Silvana Robles in reference to a letter issued jointly by the four countries.
The Peruvian Foreign Ministry announced on December 20 the expulsion of Monroy «due to the repeated expressions of the highest authorities of that country regarding the political situation in Peru», indicating that he had 72 hours to leave the country.
Following this decision, the Mexican Government urged its ambassador in Peru to return to his country to «protect his safety and physical integrity».
These measures were taken after it became known that the Mexican Executive had granted political asylum to some relatives of former Peruvian president Pedro Castillo.
